Rio 2016 Olympics, Brazil
Client: Rio 2016
On the site of the city’s Formula 1 racing track, and in a waterfront setting, the design of the Olympic Park provided a powerful opportunity for a thrilling Games followed by regeneration of this whole district.
Jason Prior and Graham Goymour led the Rio Olympic Park Masterplan team. The Rio authorities were keen to use lessons learned from London 2012 and develop a beautiful and efficient Olympic Park and an accompanying legacy development plan.
The design responded to the spectacular natural setting with its mountainous backdrop, anticipated the restoration of local habitats and also spoke to the cultural and social needs of existing and proposed communities.
We collaborated with a team of local consultants to develop the Olympic Park design, specify permanent and temporary structures and to anticipate the need and form of the legacy communities.
The post-Games legacy is intended to deliver the core facilities of Brazil’s athletics excellence program as well as a major new public park and thousands of new homes with supporting schools, shops and office space
